Dear Everybody—It’s another cool, sunny day here in Houston, probably the first one since the last time I wrote you, and very nice! Here I am again in my old wood frame house, nestled away in the little forgotten barrio at the edge of downtown, writing and watching the goings-on on the uncurbed street below—children decorating for Halloween, parents running around with ladders and lights, big parties in the making. And I’m listening to Larry Winters’ terrific Texas show on KPFT 90.1 FM. It always sounds like home to me, and I find myself tuning in whenever I’m in town, cooking, cleaning house and getting things done. If you’ve been looking for a real, authentic listen, I highly recommend Spare Change at http://kpft.org/index-main.php on Saturday afternoons from noon-3 p.m. CST.
It is a great reminder of how much community radio is a part of my life, and I hope a part of yours, too. Nationwide, stations like KPFT are supported by listeners and provide a forum for many talented artists, past and present, who don’t get played (and certainly never appear live) on the commercially-driven, narrowly-programmed mainstream stations—as Larry says, “the artists who won’t sell face creams!” In fact, I was at KPFT only a couple of weeks ago, accompanied by Greg Henkel on fiddle, when we played live on Wide Open Spaces with host, Roark Smith, at noon on October 11. If you missed it, here’s another chance to catch us at

It’s about a half an hour listen, and you’ll hear me and Greg making music and me chattering away about everything under the sun and on the horizon. I’m busy getting ready for some exciting times.
Tomorrow marks the much-anticipated arrival of Ronnie King, who’s flying in from Palm Springs, CA to co-write with me for a week. Ronnie has worked with Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, the Offspring, and a diversity of top tier acts recently, and we’re going to write us a hit.
Then, I’m heading to Nashville, where I’ll be performing on Tuesday, November 13 at the Commodore Grille in a 9: 30 p.m. songwriter showcase hosted by the lovely Debi Champion, who has made me feel so welcome when I’m in Music City. I’ll be out there for a few days, going to some meetings on Music Row and doing a few showcases at night. I’ll keep you posted and hope to see those of you in the Nashville area while I’m there.
That’s all for today. Until next time, everybody enjoy the weekend--have some fun. Hope it’s beautiful wherever you are. Y’all come!
