ASCAPlus Award + Houston & Nashville Shows

Happy New Year, Everybody!  I hope that it’s off to a productive start wherever you may be and whatever you may be doing.  I’ve been spending some time thinking about what I want to accomplish in music this year, and it is exciting to imagine what I am envisioning!  It felt fortuitous to find the ASCAPlus award had been deposited in my account in the January distribution.  Thanks to all of you on the ASCAP Pop Division panel and at the ASCAP New York and Nashville offices, who have been so generous with your time and knowledge of the industry—it is an honor to receive the ASCAPlus award for 2013-2012.

This afternoon I came across another pleasant surprise when I was doing some work online—a happy memory caught on camera when I was hanging out one sunny afternoon at the KPFT 90.1 FM radio studios here in Houston, over on Lovett Street in the Montrose, with Roark Smith, Melissa Noble, Duane Bradley, Laura Slavin, and the gang, just speaking from the heart, off the cuff, about what KPFT and non-commercial radio means to me as an artist and listener.  This short video clip seems timely, since KPFT is currently calling for volunteers for their fund-drive, and I thought you might enjoy it, too:

SHOWSIf you’re in Houston, come out Tuesday evenings between 8-11 to La Carafe—a Houston landmark venue—in the downtown theater/business district.  After 6 p.m., street parking is free and easy, and La Carafe is a romantic place to take a date or just come alone and chat quietly at the low-key bar.  It’s small, intimate, and historic (reported to be the oldest bar and oldest commercial building in Houston), a spot where art scene insiders and the downtown business set have traditionally stopped for a selection of beers and wines and conversation by candlelight.  Singer-songwriter, Jimmy Pizzitola, is hosting this weekly live acoustic music event, which also features yours truly (sometimes accompanied by Greg Henkel on fiddle!) most Tuesdays when I’m in town, as well as other Houston talent, such as Matt Harlan, who recently returned from touring in the Netherlands.  I’ve posted the details on the calendar page at http://www.glennabell.com and look forward to seeing you there on a Tuesday night.  Bring cash, by the way, because La Carafe is so historic that they still use their original antique cash register!  (They are also noted for having the coolest jukebox in town—all classic music—and being haunted, by the way.)

I’ll be in Nashville next month, and I’m making only one public appearance this time at Debi Champion’s songwriter showcase at the Commodore on West End near Vanderbilt, February 10 at 7:30 p.m.  So, if you’re in the area, mark your calendars.  Tell all your friends.   Let’s make it another night to remember in Music City.  Y’all come!
