Please Take a Minute to Vote + NPR, Joe Nick Patoski, & Nashville Song Debut

Good news, Everybody!  I’m writing to let you know that – thanks to you – I am nominated for a Houston Press Music Award again this year under Best Folk, and my good friend Jimmy Pizzitola is nominated for Best Songwriter, so I ask you to take just a minute more of your time to vote for us at

http://polls.houstonpress.com/polls/hou/musicawardsballot2012/

The process is very quick and easy, and the Houston Press is a reputable source that won’t solicit you unless you click the box requesting to receive promotions from them.  Voting closes at midnight on August 5.

Thank you so much!

More good news: an NPR feature and a Joe Nick Patoski radio debut!

When I received my current ASCAP statement, I saw that “The Southern Gothic Wedding Waltz” from my album, Perfectly Legal: Songs of Sex, Love and Murder, has been featured on NPR!  I’ve felt all along that this particular song would be at home on NPR, and it’s certainly nice to know that my little message in a bottle made it safely to harbor.  If you’d like to hear the “Southern Gothic,” I’ve posted it on the music page at www.glennabell.com and I’ve added some pictures as well, so I hope that you will stop by and visit the site when you have time.  I’ve updated my bio, too!

Last Saturday, I also received an unexpected email from the filmmaker, Jim Barham who recently released For the Sake of the Song, the PBS documentary about the legendary Houston listening room where Townes Van Zandt, Lyle Lovett, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith and so many other great Texas singer-songwriters cut their musical teeth.  Jim was letting me know that a well-known Texas music writer, Joe Nick Patoski (who authored the recent Willie Nelson biography, Willie Nelson: An Epic Life) was playing me on his Texas Music Hour of Power on Marfa Public Radio over the Fourth of July weekend!  Unfortunately, I found out and tuned in too late to hear my song, but I was quite pleasantly surprised to discover this cool station in Marfa, Texas, as well as Mr. Patoski’s unique and exciting Texas music program.  You can check it out the first full weekend of each month on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. CST.  It’s easy to listen at http://marfapublicradio.org/ and this show really is worth it.  I give it an A+ and I’m flattered that my music was included on a special holiday weekend program hosted by one as creative and discerning as Joe Nick Patoski.

Even more good news: a song is born!

I’ve worked for the most part of the last few days (and nights) on a new song that I’ll debut on Music Row at the end of this month.  It’s for a teenage girl pop singer!  Also, while I’m in Nashville, I’ll be playing at least one songwriters’ showcase on July 29 at the Commodore.  There may be more.  I’ll keep you posted.  In the meantime, I thank you for joining me again on this “road less traveled.”  It means a lot to me that you took the time.

Y’all come!
