Houston: Sun & Tues Evening Appearances

Happy New Year, Everybody!  I hope it’s turning out to be a good one for you so far.  It’s pretty cold for Houston, raining and gray, but it’s nice and warm here in my old house at the edge of the city.  I’ve been singing to my dogs and playing the blues and reading Woody Guthrie’s autobiographical Bound for Glory—what an incredible, inspiring piece of American literature that I only wish I’d discovered sooner—and enjoying doing some cooking and some songwriting, too.

On the heels of the holidays, Greg Henkel (viofiddle) and I took a rather archetypal road trip from Houston through the land of frozen fields and cattle, going north of Dallas to Denton, Texas near Oklahoma, where we played to a receptive, young “listening audience” at a packed out college house party and “headlined” for an incredibly high-energy, female fronted indie band (Hen and the Cocks) that literally rocked the house.  The whole experience was quite an adventure and had the feel of the folk/blues revival of the sixties, I think.

Now, I’m in the process of planning an advance screening of my new music video, which should be a lot of fun for the teen actors, their families, and friends and for everyone who was involved in the production.  In the meantime, I’m glad to be getting back to some of my favorite Houston spots this month, including Dean’s (Downtown—January 11), La Carafe (Downtown—January 13), Khon’s (Midtown—January 30, details forthcoming), and more.  I’ll be keeping you posted, as always, and wishing you all the best of life in 2015.  Y’all come!
